Hōryū-ji: the oldest surviving wooden building
The world's oldest surviving wooden structures; earthquake damping through the free central 'shinbashira' mast of the five-storey pagoda and loose timber joints.
Hōryū-ji is the building that proves wood can stand for over a thousand years — but it achieves this not through permanence but through flexibility. Stone resists with stiffness; the timber frame of Hōryū-ji survives by yielding to the earthquake, by swaying.
The secret of the five-storey pagoda lies in a single great mast running through its centre: the shinbashira. This mast does not carry the floors; on the contrary, it is largely independent of the load-bearing system, resting loosely on the ground or foundation at the base and rising freely to the top. During an earthquake, while the surrounding storey frames sway one way, the heavy central mast moves out of phase, acting like a pendulum-counterweight and damping the building's oscillation — the thousand-year-old ancestor of the tuned mass damper in modern skyscrapers. The storeys are not rigidly locked together; each merely sits on the one below, so earthquake energy is dissipated by friction between floors.
The joints are nail-free; timber members lock together through mortise-and-tenon joinery, but the lock is left flexible. This 'loose' geometry is not a flaw but a design: the structure sways but does not break. Hōryū-ji carries, in its oldest and purest form, a survival strategy that timber architecture developed in one of the world's most seismically active zones — damping rather than stiffness; the next thousand years of Japanese wooden architecture will be built on this logic.
